Getting your script off your computer and into the hands of those who can change your world is a sometimes frustrating and daunting task.

With thousands of scripts a month flowing past producers’ desks and script readers’ eyes, how do you make yours stand out?

When I was a novice scriptwriter, I attended a screenwriting event.   I was devastated to hear from the speaker that most script readers read ten pages then chuck the script into the garbage if nothing grabs them to push them onward.  Unfortunately, this can be very true in many cases.  All that hard work into the garbage with no response back!

It is positively a fact that getting your script into the right hands at the right time, when they are looking for your exact story takes years and sometimes revision after revision – changing the beginning, the ending, and even the genre.  It is just plain hard.

But, the first step to connecting to the right people is making sure your script is tight and forward-moving with the proper depth of character, story uniqueness, structure, pacing, texturing, production value, quality dialogue, tone consistency, and marketability.  The most effective way to reach these vital goals is to subject your creation to the eyes of someone else who is approachable, knows what to look for, and is able to help you take your story to a higher level, thereby giving you the opportunities you may not otherwise have realized.

When I wrote my first screenplay I picked one of the most difficult genres, Historical Drama.  I had a passion for this story and it took me ten years and 12 revisions, four beginnings and three endings, cutting and cutting pages of scenes that I loved but had to be willing to forfeit for the overall continuity and flow of the story line.

I had a script analyst who was amazing.  He encouraged me, yet honestly told me the issues with my script, “The dialogue is too stiff, the descriptions are too long, the main character is being overshadowed by others, I need to put conflict and resolution in every scene, and every scene must stand alone and point to the Star of the show.”

It was painful, but at the same time it was fun because I knew my story was coming to life.  It would not be the same story if I had not allowed my script analyst to inspire me to go the distance.  The most important thing was being willing to change.

There are many opportunities waiting for the right story.  By offering a script that is compelling, well-done and unique you will be in a greater position to be that storyteller.  The Spirit Wind FIlms team knows what you’re dealing with and wants to help in this important process to honor your writing passion by inspiring you to make it great.
